Following a brief introduction by Nina Karpynec, Global Head of Innovation and Sustainability for Clariant Functional Minerals, Michele Martin, a global expert on humidity indicator technologies, speaks about recent changes to humidity indicator cards (HICs).  Initially developed for the military, HICs have been widely used, along with desiccants, for more than 20 years in the “dry packs” that protect surface-mount devices used in electronics. Standards for such use is set out in IPC/JEDEC standards such as J-STD-033D.

Martin reviews multiple generations of HICs, noting that 5th-generation HICs developed by Clariant’s business segment Cargo & Device Protection (CDP) eliminate the use of halogen as well as cobalt dichloride, which was deemed a “substance of very high concern” (SVHC) by the REACH initiative in 2008. Then, when IPC/JEDEC members sought a HIC that would provide a more permanent record of serious humidity exposure than previous “reversible” HICs, Clariant CDP provided the answer.  It used its new halogen and cobalt-dichloride free chemistry to create a 6th-generation HIC – the “Type 2” Humidity Indicator Card – with a non-reversible 60% relative humidity indicator and two reversible (5% and 10%) indicators.

As you will learn in the webinar, the “Type 2” non-reversible HIC is now the recommended global standard for dry-packaging of SMDs.  Martin goes on to explain key portions of the latest IPC/JEDEC standard – J-STD-033D – and provides details for how to:

  • obtain the newer Type 2 HICs for evaluation,
  • test the reliability and accuracy of the HIC option that you select,
  • use new Type 2 HICs make quantifiable contributions to corporate sustainability programs, and
  • complete a successful transition to the new Type 2 indicators that you choose.
