Renewable Raw Materials

Sustainability is a central topic at any conference on chemicals. Several companies have already stipulated the proportion of raw materials from sustainable renewable resources they expect the chemical industry to supply.

Customers are making it quite clear that they want chemicals based on renewable resources. This is increasingly the case in the cosmetic industry and also in packaging, where there is a trend towards materials based on polylactic acid (PLA) or starch, both of which are compostable and also solve the problem of limited landfill space.

While it was previously thought that there would be competition between the food and the chemical industries for renewable raw materials, there are many different side streams of natural products that can be better exploited for chemicals. The use of biobased materials is in many segments still in its infancy. Within the next decade a substantial share of chemical products will be completely based on natural resources.
