Biotechnology
 |
Biotechnology differs from classical chemistry. Whereas chemistry normally uses elevated temperatures and pressures to drive the reactions, Biotechnology uses mild conditions close to room temperature carrying out reactions in water with the help of microorganisms and enzymes. With the help of Biotechnology we aim to substitute fossil based chemicals by bio-based analogues and develop new bio-based products with improved properties.
Biotechnology enables the sustainable conversion of renewable feedstocks into biofuels and bio-based chemicals. Clariant’s sunliquid process for example, an economical way to produce bioethanol from straw and, thereby, avoiding the competition between food and fuel while ensuring highest CO2 emission savings, would not be possible without the elaborate use of biotechnological know-how.
We also provide an industrial enzymes platform for customized applications. Furthermore, we design microorganisms for production of bio-based chemicals according to our customers needs. |
