Non-halogenated flame retardants for sustainable solutions

The performance profile required of modern flame retardants has changed significantly in recent years. Alongside their effectiveness in the event of a fire, environmental considerations play an increasing role in all phases of the product life cycle – from production and processing through to actual use and end-of-life recycling. It is an issue that has been raised by the end users of the products and followed up by the processors. As a global market leader in non-halogenated flame retardants, Clariant’s Exolit® portfolio provides great technical, economical and ecological benefit. The main target applications for Clariant’s Exolit flame retardants are electric and electronic equipment, e.g. switches, connectors, but also cable materials as alternatives to polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

  • Polyethylene (PE)

    • Exolit® AP 750

Exolit AP 750 is a non-halogenated flame retardant based on ammonium polyphosphate as main component, which develops its effectiveness through phosphorus/nitrogen synergism. In contrast to similar competitive material, it shows high processing stability. Exolit AP 750 differs in its mode of action from non phosphorus-based flame retardants (e. g. brominated, chlorinated or mineral FRs like ATH) by achieving its effect through intumescence. Material containing Exolit AP 750 will foam on exposure to flame. The carbon-rich foam layer so formed will protect the polymer and in many cases the substrate below through its heat-insulating effect, reduces further oxygen access and prevents dripping in case of a thermoplastic based formulation. Beyond the primary effects on fire behavior such as reduction of flame propagation rate, rate of heat release, dripping behavior, residual lengths of test specimens after flame tests etc., positive secondary fire effects such as low smoke density, no release of corrosive off-gases, lower formation of toxic smoke gases are of great interest. more

    • Exolit® AP 760

Exolit AP 760 is a non-halogenated flame retardant based on ammonium polyphosphate, which develops its effectiveness through phosphorus / nitrogen synergism. When incorporated into thermoplastics, it exhibits high processing stability. Exolit AP 760 differs in its mode of action from chlorine- or bromine-containing flame retardants by achieving its effect through intumescence. The thermoplastic material foams on exposure to flame. The carbon foam layer so formed protects the polymer through its heat-insulating effect, reduces further oxygen access and prevents dripping of the thermoplastic. more

RoHS 2.1 - the Story Continues

The EU Directive on the Restriction of certain Hazardous Substances in Electric and Electronic Equipment (RoHS, 2002/95/EC) was originally published in 2003. It banned the heavy metals cadmium, lead, chromium(VI), mercury as well as the brominated flame retardants PBBs and PBDEs in E&E equipment. There is a legislative mandate that the directive is revised regularly, and after long discussions in particular on any additions to the list of restricted substances, a “re-cast” was published as 2011/65/EU. Although there were strong proponents of further bans on halogenated flame retardants, no new substance bans (Annex II) were put in place more

Cutting Edge Flame Retardants for Thin Parts

Miniaturization is the creation of ever-smaller scales for mechanical, optical, and electronic products and devices. Miniaturization is a continuing trend in the production of such devices. Items which take up less space are more desired than items which are bigger and bulkier because they are easier to carry, easier to store, and much more convenient to use. more
