Unconventional Solutions for Unconventional Oil and Gas Production
In recent years, the exploration and production of oil and gas shale plays has increased exponentially around the world, creating both opportunities and challenges for producers. Clariant Oil Services collaborates with producers on active shales —such as Bakken, Barnett, Eagle Ford and Mowry—to study the formation and tailor chemical treatment services to maximize production and minimize operating costs.
We understand that reservoir characteristics and associated challenges differ from shale to shale and basin to basin. Our integrated approach to effectively addressing these challenges includes customized production chemicals, well treatment programs and service-oriented solutions. Furthermore, our advances in technology are enabling unconventional shale oil and gas reserves to be exploited efficiently and economically.
Addressing Individual Needs
Unconventional oil and gas is associated with the following sources:
- Oil shales
- Oil sands (SAGD)
- Gas shales and tight gas
- Coal bed methane
Heavy crude oils and oil sands present specific difficulties for production and transportation. This creates further technical challenges associated with oil and water separation and high oil viscosity.
In gas shales and tight gas, gas is produced by hydraulic fracturing (fracking) of the source rock. Any fluid placed into the formation poses a risk to both the integrity of the formation and the process equipment that handles flow back fluids.
Coal bed methane also poses unique challenges because much of the water produced is disposed of into the environment and must meet certain environmental regulations.
