Biofuel Additives

Meet the unique challenges presented by biofuels with Clariant products

Biofuels are an established part of the fuel market and need specially designed products to help fulfill specifications or meet expectations.

The range of Clariant products is based on the unique challenges of biofuels, supporting the cold flow behavior of different characteristics of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) like CFPP and PP as well as sedimentation within the oil samples. Clariant products help to improve B100, meeting specifications according to European Committee for Standardization (EN) and American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM). They also help to improve the handling of high saturated fatty acid methylester based FAME by lowering the pour point of those fuels.

Clariant products can also help stabilizing Bx –mixtures especially concerning sedimentation. By additivating the biofuel component itself, a stabilizing effect of the Bx-mixture can be observed.

  • Help control sedimentation in your biofuels with Clariant Dodiflow cold flow improver

Clariant has developed a range of products designed to improve the Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) of different FAME’s. Depending on the raw material for the production of FAME, the amount and distribution of saturated fatty acid methylester can differ significantly. Paraffin distribution in crude-based diesel fuel determines the cold flow behavior of the final fuel. The same is true for the saturated components in FAME. With Clariant Cold Flow Improver, DODIFLOW®, the CFPP can be approved even with a higher percentage of such saturated methyl ester.

Minimizing sedimentation in biofuel is important to improve operability. The Clariant Cold Flow Improver also acts as a wax dispersant to reduce sedimentation of additivated biofuel in the storage tanks as well as fuel tanks of cars / trucks.

Depending on the source of the FAME, sedimentation can be a concern in biofuel/diesel-blends. Clariant Flow Improver is specifically designed to help to reduce sedimentation in such blends by separate additivation of the biodiesel-component before blending with diesel.

  • Improve the handling properties of your fuel and application with Clariant pour point depressants

A high content of saturated fatty acid methylester in FAME can raise the pour point of the fuel. This often causes handling problems during the life cycle of such fuels, especially at lower temperatures and / or during storage in above ground tanks.

Clariant Pour Point Depressants for biodiesel help to improve the handling properties by lowering the pour point.
