Non-halogenated flame retardants for sustainable solutions

With its Exolit® grades Clariant offers an extensive range of non-halogenated flame retardants for thermosets based on phosphorus chemistry.

Thermoset systems which incorporate Exolit flame retardants can pass the most demanding fire tests, whilst retaining good mechanical properties. These features allow the materials to be used in new and demanding fields of application. In the event of fire involving Exolit-containing systems, a reduction in smoke density is apparent and no corrosive fumes such as HCl are given off.   • Polyurethanes (PUR)

    • Exolit® AP 422

      Exolit AP 422 is a fine-particle ammonium polyphosphate (phase II) produced by a special method. The product is largely insoluble in water and completely insoluble in organic solvents. It is colourless, non-hygroscopic and non-flammable. more

    • Exolit® AP 750

      Exolit AP 750 is a non-halogenated flame retardant based on ammonium polyphosphate as main component, which develops its effectiveness through phosphorus/nitrogen synergism. In contrast to similar competitive material, it shows high processing stability. Exolit AP 750 differs in its mode of action from non phosphorus-based flame retardants (e. g. brominated, chlorinated or mineral FRs like ATH) by achieving its effect through intumescence. Material containing Exolit AP 750 will foam on exposure to flame. The carbon-rich foam layer so formed will protect the polymer and in many cases the substrate below through its heat-insulating effect, reduces further oxygen access and prevents dripping in case of a thermoplastic based formulation. Beyond the primary effects on fire behavior such as reduction of flame propagation rate, rate of heat release, dripping behavior, residual lengths of test specimens after flame tests etc., positive secondary fire effects such as low smoke density, no release of corrosive off-gases, lower formation of toxic smoke gases are of great interest. more

    • Exolit® AP 766

      Exolit AP 766 is a non-halogenated flame retardant based on phosphorus and nitrogen synergism. The product achieves its flame retardant effect through intumescence. The thermoplastic material foams and crosslinks on exposure to flame and forms a stable char at the surface acting as a barrier. The protective layer provides a heat-insulation effect, reduces oxygen access and prevents dripping of molten polymer. more

    • Exolit® OP 550

      Clariant’s Exolit OP 550 is a flame retardant specifically designed for flexible polyurethane foams. The product is a reactive flame retardant that can be chemically reacted into the PU matrix, preventing unwanted migration from the material. Therefore, very stringent emission standards for PU flexible foams can be achieved. This makes the product suitable for low VOC applications, for example in the automotive industry.     • Exolit® OP 560

      Clariant’s Exolit OP 560 is a flame retardant specifically designed for flexible polyurethane foams. As a reactive flame retardant, it can be chemically reacted into the PU matrix, preventing unwanted migration from the material. Therefore, Exolit OP 560 allows meeting the most stringent VOC requirements of the automotive industry and has shown best-in-class performance in demanding low-emission applications.     • Exolit® RP 6520

      Exolit RP 6520, is a brown-red paste, and is a thixotropic blend of castor oil with stabilised, microencapsulated red phosphorus. The paste form allows safe and simple handling and thus processing is made easier. The thixotropic nature of this concentrate hinders the sedimentation process and simplifies the re-homogenisation after long storage periods. more

      Exolit AP 423 is a very fine-particle ammonium polyphosphate produced by a special method. The crystal modification is phase II. The product is largely insoluble in water and completely insoluble in organic solvents. It is a white powder, halogen free and non-flammable. more

      Exolit AP 740 is a white free flowing powder. It is a non-halogenated additive flame retardant based on ammonium polyphosphate which develops its effectiveness through phosphorus/nitrogen synergism. Exolit AP 740 differs in its mode of action from chlorine or bromine containing flame retardants by achieving its effect through intumescence. The flame retarded material foams on exposure to flame.     • Exolit® RP 614 presscake

      Exolit RP 614 Presscake is a fine brown-red powder with a water content of 10-25%, based on a highly stabilized, microencapsulated grade of red phosphorus. This allows a safe and simple handling of the red phosphorus in a presscake form, and avoids the hazards associated when working with dry red phosphorus powders. Exolit RP 614 Presscake is noted for its high oxidation and thermal stability. It is insoluble in water and organic solvents. Due to the combination of stabilization and microencapsulation, the material is mostly inert against atmospheric influences. more

  • Viscose Fibers

    • Exolit® 5060 PK

      Clariant´s Exolit 5060 PK is an organic non-halogenated phosphorus flame retardant, especially designed for incorporation into viscose fibres. It is supplied as a wet presscake of 2,2'-oxybis [5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinane]-2,2'-disulfide. more
