In this second episode of Clariant's "Be the explorer" concept, the reader is sent to a journey to the Java Island in Indonesia to discover the Jamu traditional medicine and the plants associated. From this is taken the inspiration to create a formulation to take care of the body and bring well-being sensations.

Travelling through Java to discover the Jamu tradition and Lurlur rituals

Yogyakarta, in Central Java, was once the heart of the Javanese culture, but also the birthplace of the traditional medicine called Jamu, that may have originated in the Mataram Kingdom era, some 1300 years ago. According to Javanese tradition, the famous beauty of “putri keraton” (princess and palace ladies) is linked to jamu. The lulur ritual, used since the 17th century, is believed to be the secret of their perfect skin.

Translated as "polish the skin", the ritual begins with feet cleansing, followed by Lulur itself to remove dead skin cells and illuminate the skin. Next comes a full body massage with virgin Coconut oil. The final step is a luxurious bath where fragrant flower blossoms float around to complete this traditional skin polishing beauty ritual.
