Corrosion inhibitors for emulsion-type metalworking fluids

Driven by the demand to reduce weight in order to increase energy and fuel efficiency, lightweight materials such as aluminum alloys, magnesium, titanium and high strength steel are becoming increasingly important in many industries. In the automotive industry for instance the use of light metals is expected to grow from approximately 30% to almost 70% in the next two decades.

In spite of all these changes, traditional ferrous metals such as steel are continuously produced and machined. Copper or cobalt will also remain. Coping with different metals that are present in the workpiece and in the tools is no easy task for a metalworking fluid. As a key supplier to lubricant formulators, we understand our customers’ increasing need for specialized components and formulation support, especially for aluminum cutting fluids. Effective corrosion inhibitors that protect both steel and aluminum while reducing copper and cobalt leaching help metalworking fluid formulators to address today’s formulation challenges.

Our portfolio comprises water-soluble and water-dispersible products for formulating semi-synthetic and milky emulsions. Excellent anticorrosion results can also be achieved under difficult conditions.

Corrosion inhibitors for fully synthetic metalworking fluids

Our Hostacor® I product family of corrosion inhibitors for fully synthetic MWFs gives fluid makers a choice over how much freedom they desire when formulating their designs. Two of our corrosion inhibitors are completely label free.

Additionally, the low odor helps to reduce smelly components in formulation.

The Hostacor® I chemistry boosts protection, lubricity and hard water stability.

Additionally, we recommend combining it with PAGs such as Genapol PN 30 as it creates a synergistic lubrication effect on aluminum with a better lubricity at low pH.

  • Hostacor ITD

    Hostacor ITD is a versatile performance additive for metal working fluids and lubricants. Besides of being an effective EP/AW additive, it provides excellent corrosion protection for steel and aluminum alloys while reducing copper and cobalt leaching. Hostacor ITD is recommended for metal working fluids (emulsions, semi-synthetic neat oil), rolling oils & emulsions, fire-resistant hydraulic fluids (HFD, HFD-U) and gear oils.

    Hostacor IT is a pre-neutralized, low foaming corrosion inhibitor mainly used in cutting & grinding fluids, in rolling emulsions and water-based hydraulic fluids (HFA-E, HFA-S). Hostacor IT is an excellent corrosion inhibitors for steel and show very good hard water stability. It can be used alone or in combination with other water-soluble corrosion inhibitors or lubricants.

  • Hostagliss L4

    Hostagliss L4 is a complex ester and used as lubricity improver and water-dispersable corrosion inhibitor for milky, semisynthetic and neat oil metalworking fluids. Furthermore it is used as synthetic base fluid for rolling emulsions. Hostagliss L4 is also listed on the “Lubricant Substance Classification list (LuSC). Thus suitable for lubricants with European Ecolabel certification.

  • Genamin CH 020

    Genamin CH 020 is used as an alkaline component in emulsifiable metalworking fluids, rolling fluids, metal cleaners, polymer quenchants and fire resistant hydraulic fluids. It shows good emulsifying properties and improves the dispersibility and stability of emulsions. Occasionally, Genamin CH 020 improves the spontaneity and shortens the emulsifying time considerably. In contrast to other tertiary amines used in water-based formulations, such as triethanolamine, Genamin CH 020 reduces the leaching of heavy metals like cobalt or copper drastically. This is also true for chromium leaching out of "chromated" or "chromatized" steel parts, in particular when coatings are based on Cr(III)-salts.Due to the high boiling point, Genamin CH 020 is a low volatile component which can be used for high temperature operations, e.g. heavy chip removal operations and emulsion cleaners applied at 80 °C or higher.Genamin CH 020 stabilizes emulsions durable and increases their lifetime also under harsh conditions. Genamin CH 020 is also a suitable additive for an adjustment of the buffering capacity. In Asia, the product is available under the name Genamin CH 020 J.

  • Hostacor IS

    Hostacor IS is a low foaming corrosion inhibitor mainly used in cutting & grinding fluids, in rolling emulsions and water-based hydraulic fluids (HFA-E, HFA-S). It is a solid product and comes in acid form, offering the formulator full flexibility for neutralization. Water-soluble salts of Hostacor IS are obtained by neutralization with alkanolamines and aqueous alkali hydroxides. These are used either alone or in combination with other water-soluble corrosion inhibitors or lubricants. Alkanolamines salts derived from Hostacor IS are excellent corrosion inhibitors for steel and show very good hard water stability. Hostacor IS is compatible with phosphoric acid esters in neutralized form, like Hordaphos MDB. Thus extreme-pressure properties of semi- and full synthetic formulations based on Hostacor IS can be adjusted.

  • Hostacor 2732

    Hostacor 2732 is a liquified version of Hostacor IS and used as low foaming corrosion inhibitor in cutting & grinding fluids, in rolling emulsions and water-based hydraulic fluids (HFA-E, HFA-S). Hostacor 2732 is insoluble in water. Water soluble salts of Hostacor 2732 are obtained by neutralization with alkanolamines and hydroxides. These are used alone or in combination with other water soluble corrosion inhibitors or lubricants. Alkanolamines salts derived from Hostacor 2732 are excellent corrosion inhibitors for steel and show very good hard water stability.
