Postbiotics for a healthy skin

More than 10 000 microbial species of bacteria, yeast, fungi and viruses inhabit the human body and compose our microbiota. Some are commensal (they co-exist with the human), some are symbiotic and have mutualistic beneficial relations with our body, and some are non pathogenic but can produce harmful substances depending on their environmental conditions. Beneficial species prevent the proliferation of detrimental ones by occupying the physical space and chemically inhibiting the growth of competing pathogenic species, through for example the production of lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, or other antimicrobial peptides.

The skin microbiota has a crucial protective effect as it helps maintain the immune system, protects against allergens, repairs skin damages and limits damages caused by oxidation among other. Therefore, any modification in skin bacteria composition leads to cutaneous imbalance and affects the skin well-being.

The use of active ingredients that can favor the growth of good bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium or Staphylococcus epidermidis is a new trend in cosmetics and skin cares.

These active ingredients are classified in 3 families:

  • the prebiotics, that provide specific food for the good bacteria to help them grow
  • the probiotics, that are inactivated bacteria
  • the postbiotics, active elements that can be used either by the good bacteria for their development or directly by the skin

What are postbiotics?

Postbiotics are metabolites secreted by the live bacteria that compose the skin microbiome and/or released after bacteria lysis (once the bacteria die).

Amongst them can be found enzymes, peptides, teichoic acids, peptidoglycans, polysaccharides, cell-surface proteins, or organic acids (such as lactic acid).

What are the benefits of postbiotics on the skin?

Postbiotics can be used by the good bacteria as specific food in order to grow, and therefore contribute to reinforce the skin microbiome. In addition, they can also go through the epidermis and be used directly by skin cells to improve their biological functions. As a result, they contribute to the reinforcement of skin barrier function and decrease irritations reactions. The reinforced microbiome serves as a shield against environmental factors such as free radicals, UV radiation, and pollution.

BifiDa, a new postbiotic for cosmetics

BifiDa is an extract from fermented Bifidobacterium.

Bifidobacterium is one of the good bacteria that helps the body defends itself against pathogenic organisms. It has an anaerobic metabolism and when it ferments, it produces metabolites and releases them in the environment. Therefore, an extract of fermented Bifidobacterium, such as BifiDa, is rich in vitamins, proteins, lactic acid and minerals.

Due to its composition, BifiDa is a natural solution that can be used for skin conditioning and skin smoothing.
