A new generation of

ORGANIC PIGMENTS

For an intense color effect of paint, its pigments must be finely and evenly dispersed. During the conventional paint manufacturing process, one of the most important steps is the dispersion of pigments. Clariant has developed a new range of organic pigments, the »Easily Dispersible Waterborne« (EDW), to simplify this process. With the EDW pigment range, Clariant provides a solution that makes the bead mill superfluous, reducing the production of pigment preparations to one single step.

Challenge

PIGMENT AGGLOMERATION REQUIRES A TIME-CONSUMING AND EXPENSIVE DISPERSION PROCESS

One of the main challenges of conventional processes is that the microscopically small pigment particles stick together like tiny magnets. To disperse them evenly in the paint, several steps like e.g. milling is required. This process is time consuming, expensive, uses up a lot of energy and needs costly technical equipment.

Solution

A NEW SERIE OF ORGANIC PIGMENTS FOR WATER-BASED PIGMENT DISPERSIONS: EDW PIGMENTS

EDW pigments have a modified surface treated with special additives to avoid clumping. They can easily be dispersed with a dissolver without the milling step in a shorter time, improving the eco footprint of paint manufacture. The processing time is shortened leading to increased production capacity while simultaneously realizing savings in electricity consumption and generation of waste water.

  • Hansa Brilliant Yellow 2GX 72-S

Hansa Brilliant Yellow 2GX 72-S is a modified version with a highly efficient and widely compatible additive. Optimum tinting strength can be achieved in relatively short time using a dissolver and suitable dispersing agents. The simplified dispersion process that does not include a bead mill results in a cost efficient manufacturing of pigment dispersions. Furthermore dispersions made with Hansa Brilliant Yellow 2GX 72-S can be used to tint the new generation of low VOC decorative paints.** As defined in EU directive 2004/42/EC, annex II, phase II. VOC standards and regulations vary by location. Product specific VOC information is available to customers upon request. It is the responsibility of the coatings manufacturer to determine standard compliance and appropriate claim for their products.

  • Hostaperm Yellow H3G 02

Hostaperm Yellow H3G 02 is a “next generation” Pigment Yellow 154, using a more ecological finishing process. While the pigment maintains the universal application profile which is typical for P.Y. 154 pigments, it is particularly easy to disperse in water-borne systems: Optimum tinting strength can be achieved much faster in a bead mill or just by using a high-speed dissolver and suitable dispersing agents. Dispersions made with Hostaperm Yellow H3G 02 can be used to tint the new generation of low VOC decorative paints. * * As defined in EU directive 2004/42/EC, annex II, phase II.
