Malaria kills hundreds
OF THOUSANDS EVERY YEARMalaria is still a potentially deadly disease. Every single year, it kills hundreds of thousands of people. Young children under the age of five are the main victims, as three of four deaths occur in this age group. Insecticide-treated mosquito nets are a simple way of protection against mosquitoes – and, therefore, against the malaria parasite they transmit. Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) release their embedded active agents over their whole lifespan without any re-impregnation needed.
IRREGULAR SUBSTANCE RELEASE AND PREMATURE LOSS OF PROTECTIONLong Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) are supposed to keep their effectiveness for a minimum of 20 washings or three years, according to the specification of the World Health Organization (WHO). They have been developed as a superior alternative to simple insecticide-treated nets, as these have to be impregnated regularly by dipping them into an immersion bath and leaving them to dry and air out afterwards. During that two days period, the user has no protection against mosquitoes.
The CESA® antimosquito masterbatch enables the production of especially durable, efficient mosquito nets that keep their functionality for more than five years and 30 washings. Its composition of a specially formulated carrier and functionalized additives activates the incorporated alpha-cypermethrin, which acts as a strong neurotoxic agent and attacks the mosquitoes’ central nervous system – leading finally to their death.
The Clariant masterbatch formulation allows the polyethylene monofilament to get drawn to orient the polyethylene molecules in a preferential direction which imparts high tenacity. Thanks to the resulting low vapor pressure of the CESA® masterbatch, only a low amount of the active agent gets to the fiber surface at room temperature. During use of the net, the so called glass transition temperature causes a permanent rotation of the macromolecules, ensuring a controlled release of the insecticide, and therefore permanent, consistent protection.
