Biofuels & Derivatives
The energy industry is currently undergoing a paradigm shift. More and more economies are looking at possibilities to substitute fossil resources by renewable feedstocks, both to secure energy supply and to increase sustainability. The transport sector in particular will continue to be largely dependent on liquid energy sources. Advanced biofuels from agricultural residues are the preferred way to reach renewable substitution goals in the short to medium term.
Clariant’s sunliquid® technology for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into sugars, followed by fermentation to cellulosic ethanol contributes innovative solutions to these challenges by providing a thorough and entirely integrated process design package and innovative technology features offering in effect a one-stop-shop solution. Clariant’s technology is flexible to be used to convert different feedstocks on a regional basis, for example corn stover in North America, bagasse in South America or wheat straw in Europe and can be adapted to various plant concepts. The production costs can compete with those of first-generation bioethanol and the greenhouse gas savings of the sunliquid® ethanol are up to 95% compared to fossil fuels. Since the sunliquid® utilizes agricultural residues, it is not affected by the fuel-versus-food-debate. In addition, sunliquid® paves the way to a second generation sugar platform for the production of biobased chemicals.
Realization on an industrial scale is no longer merely a dream. Since July 2012 Clariant has successfully been operating a demonstration plant in Straubing, Germany, with an annual capacity of up to 1,000 tons, converting approximately 4,500 tons of lignocellulosic feedstock per year.
For the food and beverage industry, Clariant offers tailor-made solutions delivering technological and nutritional formulation benefits driven by a robust understanding of single ingredients and systems at highest quality standards.
We work very close to the packaged food industry in selected emerging countries in order to clearly understand needs and develop customer specific Vitipure™ solutions.
Electronic Materials & Conductive Inks
Clariant develops and sells conductive inks based on nano-silver formulations for inkjet and other printing technologies. Clariant silver inks, Prelect®, address the need for cost-efficient, high performance solutions for the emerging printed electronic markets, such as displays, photovoltaics, touch screens or electronics.
