RSPO Certified Ingredients for
Personal care and Home care

Clariant offers RSPO certified palm-based ingredients for Personal and Home care

Palm feedstock is an extremely efficient and highly versatile renew-able raw material.
Today Palm Oil (PO) and Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) is a widely used renewable raw material in food and chemical applications. It is under scrutiny from a social and environmental perspective by the public, NGO’s and consumers.

Although oil palm is a much more efficient producer of vegetable oil than other oil crops, there is concern that the growing demand for palm oil could lead to rapid and ill-managed expansion of palm oil production and result in serious environmental and social consequences such as deforestation, loss of natural habitats, illegal fires and land conflicts with indigenous people.

But the production of palm oil is equally a means for economic growth and poverty alleviation.

"The question is not one of palm oil or not, but of how to maximize the economic and development benefits while minimizing the adverse social and environmental effects.¹"

In response to the urgent and pressing global call for sustainability, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was formed in 2004 with the objective of promoting the growth and use of sustainable oil palm products through credible global sustainability standards developed through involvement of all stakeholders.

The RSPO is a non-profit organization comprising oil palm growers, palm oil processors and traders, consumer goods manufacturers, environmental NGOs, social NGOs, banks/investors and retailers.

Clariant‘s targets on RSPO

Since 2014 Clariant increasingly contributes to the production of certified sustainable palm oil
Since 2016 all relevant Clariant key production sites have been RSPO certified, following the Mass Balance certification rules

In order to implement the global roll out of RSPO Supply Chain Mass Balance certification for its relevant production sites, Clariant has successfully certified its first site (Gendorf, Germany) according to the RSPO Mass Balance supply chain standard in July 2014, with additional sites in Europe and Asia in 2015 and remaining sites completed in 2016. Clariant also supports its joint venture GAC (Global Amines Company), to achieve Mass Balance certification for its production sites.

At Clariant, we are showing our commitment by working to increase transparency within Clariant, working actively with our suppliers in partnership, and a focus on traceability.

Clariant‘s commitment to sustainable palm based materials

Sustainability and renewable based raw materials
Sustainability is a core element of Clariant’s business strategy and value creation proposal. As part of its sustainability strategy, Clariant intends to increase the use of renewable raw materials, as bio-based chemicals have the potential to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the dependency on fossil feedstock. To ensure sustainability of its operations, Clariant is committed to responsible and sustainable sourcing of its renewable raw materials. Palm based materials are a specific focus, as customers and other stakeholders have expressed their concerns about the sustainability of these materials.

Sustainability of palm based materials
Clariant has taken action to ensure sustainability of its palm based raw materials. The company has been a RSPO member since February 2011 and is committed to the RSPO principles for sustainable production and sourcing of palm based raw materials. Therefore, RSPO membership is a supplier selection criterion for palm based materials at Clariant.

Principles of the RSPO supply chain certification
Supply chain certification requires compliance with the requirements of the RSPO Supply Chain Certification standards, which are based around a quality management system in which production identification and control are the key objectives.

segregated process

Segregated
In a Segregated supply chain, sustainable palm oil from different certified sources is kept separate from ordinary palm oil throughout the chain. However, it cannot be traced back to the individual producer as different sources of segregated sustainable palm oil are mixed along the supply chain.

Mass Balance
For Mass Balance certification, sustainable palm oil from certified sources is monitored administratively in the chain, but is mixed with ordinary palm oil. A company is compliant as long as the input-output quantities are balanced.

Sustainable sourcing starts with transparency across the supply chain. Clariant is committed to acting responsibly and responding to market needs by enabling traceability of our raw materials.

The RSPO supply chain certification system

Implementing the Mass Balance supply chain certification standard for palm derivatives is the right way forward
The RSPO has set up four supply chain certification systems (SCCS) with different levels of traceability and cost. A claim a RSPO member can make about its commitment to sustainable palm oil depends on the type of SCCS.
