inspired by outer space
Since the dawn of times, space and cosmos have always attracted humans. Sending a man in space in 1961 was the first step to space conquest, that found its apogee in 1969 with the first man on the moon, and the future is to reach for Mars. A total of 316 inhabited flights have already been done and 562 different astronauts spent a total cumulated time of 1,276,333 hours in space. But spending time out there is also strongly stressing astronaut's bodies, due to the absence of gravity, regular night and day cycle, or solar radiations among other. Numerous scientific studies have been conducted so far to evaluate the consequences of this environment on the body. NASA even had the opportunity to study the impacts of space vs. earth environments thanks to two twin astronauts, to analyse some epigenetic mechanisms that influence body functions with the same genetics.
These findings on how cells functions can be affected by extreme environment can be used as an inspiration to develop active ingredients for cosmetic formulations.
Target epigenetics mechanisms with Epseama to prevent premature aging
NASA conducted a study with twin astronauts, one being sent to space and the other remaining on Earth, to determine how environmental conditions can affect genes expression. With two similar DNAs, twins living in different environments express their genes differently due to environmental factors such as sunlight, pollution, allergens and irritants exposure. This mechanism is called epigenetics. One of the possible application is the modulation of gene expression when cells age, as for example by targeting the long non-coding RNA nc886, which was recently found to affect the activity of Protein Kinase-R (PKR), a protein known to induce premature aging in various diseases and organs. Clariant Active Ingredients conducted scientific studies, demonstrating that nc886 expression decreases with age, and developed Epseama. It stimulates the expression of nc886 and protects the expression of nc886 under UVB exposure.
Thanks to Epseama, difficult to remove nasolabial wrinkles are efficiently reduced in only one month, decreasing by 19% in volume and 10% in roughness. Spots are reduced by 10% and surface pigmentation is homogeneized, for a rejuvenated look.
Restore circadian rhythm with B-Circadin to reinforce biological functions
In space, the night and day rhythm is different than what is encountered on earth. This change affects the circadian rhythm of the astronauts. On earth too, our cell's circadian rhythms can be disrupted, due to our modern lifestyles: increasing use of screens, stress, or reduction of sleep time amongst other. As a consequence, their biological functions are impacted and the cells can't efficiently repair from damages caused by UV radiation or inflammation processes.
B-Circadin helps skin cells recover a normal circadian rhythm. It protects the cells against oxidative stress induced by high blue light dose by up to 55%, and improves skin detoxification pathway. It also increases microcirculation and decreases puffiness by 18% in 4 days, for a visible impact on skin complexion.
Detoxify and clean skin with BioDTox using minimum amount of water
Water in space is scarce and must be used with precaution. On earth also, water saving becomes an increasing preoccupation of people using cosmetic products. With BioDtox, an active ingredient that facilitates the elimination of particles on the skin and efficiently detoxifies the skin to reduce sebum, tightens pores and exfoliates softly, Clariant Active Ingredients, offers a solution to reduce the amount of water needed for cleansing.
BioDTox significantly removes particles on the skin, up to 46,6%, compared to water alone, and brightens skin tone of people living in polluted environments.
Protects against sun radiations with VageStop
Without the protection of atmosphere, astronauts are exposed to a high amount of radiations emitted mainly by the sun. On earth, our atmosphere absorbs most of these radiations, but a significant amount of UVB is still able to pass. Therefore, excessive and chronic sun exposure can damage skin cells.
VageStop efficiently protects them against DNA damage caused by UVB radiation, and also helps the cells recover by increasing repair of damaged DNA. It significantly improves viability of keratinocytes and fibroblasts exposed to UVB by up to 102%, to preserve epidermal and dermal integrity.
