Clariant Oil Services Effectively Treats Sour Coal Bed Methane Well in the Raton Basin

Benefits
  • Safe and effective method of removing H2S from coal bed methane wells
  • Completely eliminated H2S levels in the meter run before the pipeline
  • Drastically reduced H2S levels in the meter run, minimizing risk of corrosion in gas pipeline
  • Decreased compressor down-time and increased production and profitability of the well

Background

An operator in the Raton Basin was experiencing very high levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in a coal bed methane well, making it impossible to sell the produced natural gas. The H2S levels in the well were measuring between 180 ppm and 200 ppm at the well head, causing concerns for the operator and other personnel who were not used to working around sour wells. The operator contacted Clariant Oil Services for a solution that would both decrease the levels of H2S in the coal bed methane well and improve the quality of the natural gas. The system conditions are shown in Table 1.

Clariant Oil Services Solutions and Value Delivered

After a thorough review and analysis of the well, Clariant Oil Services selected the H2S scavenger SCAVTREAT 1173 for its successful track record in gas applications. Based on the H2S rates at the wellhead, SCAVTREAT 1173 was injected into the meter run before the pipeline at an optimized rate of 6 quarts per day. This treatment rate resulted in a 100% removal of the H2S in the meter run before the pipeline; a third-party contractor collecting gas samples showed H2S levels of just 0.004% in the meter run.

The removal of H2S created a much safer environment for personnel by eliminating the potential risk of exposure. Reduced levels of H2S also minimized the risk of corrosion, as levels were recorded at less than 1 ppm. And the halt in spiked levels of H2S ended the need for compressor down-time, allowing for the continued production of 30 mm/scfd to the pipeline.
