Heat Transfer Fluids

Direct-to-Chip cooling for Data Centers –
Heat transfer fluids by Clariant

Ready-to-use MPG-based coolant for Direct-to-Chip cooling

Clariant provides heat transfer fluids for data center liquid cooling systems. Built on 75+ years of thermal management expertise, our fluids keep Technology Cooling Systems (TCS) running reliably while protecting equipment from corrosion, fouling, and microbial growth. For Facility Water Systems (FWS), established Antifrogen™ solutions are also available.

We offer a portfolio of options for direct-to-chip cooling. For most applications, Antifrogen™ PG 25 is the recommended choice:

  • Ready-to-use mixture based on monopropylene glycol (MPG) with a low toxicity profile
  • Antifreeze protection down to -11°C
  • Protection against fouling and microbial growth
  • Fulfills the requirements of the OCP guideline

Available on request: concentrate and customized concentrations, fluorescent tracer for leak detection, and low carbon footprint versions based on mass-balance or recycled glycol.

Antifrogen™ PG25 - Greater chemistry for data centers

36006_original_Clariant_Antifrogen Heat Transfer Fluid solutions for Data Centers EN 2026

The challenge: Rising heat loads in Data Centers

Higher processor densities are increasing heat output across data center cooling systems. Conventional cooling methods are no longer sufficient for high-density server environments. Direct-to-chip cooling addresses this by removing heat at the source. It requires a fluid that delivers both thermal performance and long-term equipment protection.

The solution: Clariant heat transfer fluids for direct cooling

Clariant's data center cooling fluids are formulated for Technology Cooling Systems (TCS) and Facility Water Systems (FWS). The primary solution is Antifrogen™ PG 25.

Property Antifrogen™ PG 25
Base fluid Monopropylene glycol (MPG)
Toxicity profile Low
Antifreeze protection Down to -11°C
Corrosion standard Exceeds ASTM D1384 (10x test duration)
Industry compliance Fulfills the requirements of the OCP guideline
Format Ready-to-use (concentrates available on request)

  • Protectogen™ C Aqua
Protectogen™ C aqua is a yellowish, water-soluble, glycol-free liquid which contains a highly efficient combination of corrosion inhibitors. The product is inhibited without the use of nitrite, amine, borate, phosphate, and silicate. The optimization of the corrosion inhibition system was performed without the use of CMR-substances ( C ancerogenic M utagenic R eprotoxic). According to the formulation, Protectogen™ C aqua does not contain any restricted substances as described in the EG-guideline 2011/65/EG (RoHS = Restriction of Hazardous Substances), article 4 §1 like lead, mercury, cadmium, chromate VI, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).

What heat transfer fluid does Clariant recommend for direct-to-chip cooling?

Clariant recommends Antifrogen™ PG25 for direct-to-chip cooling in data centers. It is a ready-to-use, MPG-based fluid with a low toxicity profile, antifreeze protection to -11°C, and corrosion protection that exceeds ASTM D1384 at 10 times the standard test duration.

What is direct-to-chip cooling?

Direct-to-chip cooling is a data center liquid cooling method that removes heat directly from processor chips using a coolant fluid. It is used in Technology Cooling Systems (TCS) to manage the higher heat loads of modern, high-density servers.

What antifreeze protection do Clariant's data center coolants provide?

Antifrogen™ PG25 provides antifreeze protection down to -11°C. Antifrogen™ EG20 provides protection down to -9°C.

Why use an MPG-based fluid for data center cooling?

Monopropylene glycol (MPG) has a low toxicity profile compared to monoethylene glycol (MEG). This makes Antifrogen™ PG25 a safer handling option for facility teams in data center environments.

Do Clariant's data center cooling fluids meet industry corrosion standards?

Yes. Antifrogen™ PG25 fulfills the requirements of the OCP guideline and exceeds the ASTM D1384 corrosion standard, tested at 10 times the standard test duration.

Are custom concentrations available?

Yes. Concentrates and customized glycol concentrations are available on request for all Clariant data center cooling fluids.

Does Clariant support leak detection in cooling systems?

Yes. A fluorescent tracer option is available on request to support fast leak detection.

What sustainable options are available?

Low carbon footprint versions are available through a mass balance approach or the use of recycled glycol.

What technical support does Clariant offer for data center cooling?

Clariant offers the Antifrogen™ Service, which includes fluid sample analysis, condition monitoring, and maintenance recommendations. An online calculator is also available for concentration, freeze protection, and physical parameter calculations.
