Emulsogen LCN 287

Nonionic emulsifier for emulsion polymerization & compatibilizer for tinted waterborne coatings

Edition Date :
July 08, 2021

Emulsogen LCN 287 is used as a nonionic emulsifier for the emulsion polymerization of monomers like acrylates, styrene-acrylates, styrene-butadiene, and vinyl acetate. It improves the shear, temperature and electrolyte stability of polymer dispersions. The recommended usage is 1-3% active based on monomers.

Emulsogen LCN 287 also acts as wetting agent/compatibilizer in waterborne acrylic lacquers (low PVC). The general dosage (supply form) for this purpose is 1.4%-2.1%. The product is suitable for low odor paints applying for eco-labels such as Blue Angel or Ecoflower.

The use of Emulsogen LCN 287 offers the following advantages:
Product properties:
•low VOC
•free of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO)
•hazard label free
•readily biodegradable
•easy to handle (liquid material; soluble in water)
•FDA approved
•similar polymerization results to APEOs
Performance in emulsion polymerization:
•maintains low viscosity of polymer emulsion at different shear rates
•enhanced electrolyte stability
•improved shelf life (high freeze thaw stability)
•similar polymerization results to APEOs
•dosage level is 1-3% based on monomers
Performance in water-borne acrlyic lacquers (low PVC):
•prevents rub-out effects
•increased tinting strength
•improved wetting of the coated surface
•excellent adhesion on metal surfaces
•prolonged workability
•use recommendation: 1.4-2.1% supply dosage

Emulsogen LCN 287 can be used as wetting agent in water-borne coatings. It is especially recommended as compatibilizer in tinted emulsion paints (high PVC). Dosage level for this purpose is 1.4%-2.1% in the paint formulation.

Emulsogen LCN 287 is also used as nonionic emulsifier for the emulsion polymerization of:

  • Styrene/acrylate dispersions
  • Acrylate dispersions
  • Vinyl acetate dispersions
  • Butadiene/styrene latex

Dosage level is 1 - 3 % based on monomers.
