Emulsogen LCN 158

Nonionic emulsifier for emulsion polymerization, compatibilizer and process aid for waterborne coatings

Edition Date :
September 17, 2021
Emulsogen LCN 158 is used as a nonionic emulsifier for emulsion polymerization improving the shear, temperature and electrolyte stability of polymer dispersions. The recommended usage is 2% active based on monomers.
In waterborne and solvent-borne lacquers (low PVC), Emulsogen LCN 158 can be used as a compatibilizer to improve tinting strength and to reduce rub-out, water absorption, and haze effects. Dosage recommendation (supply form) in waterborne acrylic lacquers is 1.3-1.9% and in solvent-borne alkyd lacquers 0.33-0.66%.

When used during the premixing phase in the production of waterborne emulsion paints (high PVC), Emulsogen LCN 158 also acts as a processing aid and helps to reduce the grinding time by faster deagglomeration of TiO2 and fillers. This is especially of interest in areas of hard water. The general dosage recommendation (supply form) for this purpose is 0.3%.

The use of Emulsogen LCN 158 offers the following advantages:

Product properties:
•low VOC
•free of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO)
•readily biodegradable
•easy to handle (liquid material; soluble in water)
•FDA approved

Performance as emulsifier in emulsion polymerization:
•maintains low viscosity of polymer emulsion at different shear rates
•enhanced electrolyte stability
•improved shelf life (high freeze thaw stability)
•similar polymerization results to APEOs
•Dosage level is 2 % based on monomers.

Performance as compatibilizer in water-borne acrylic lacquers (low PVC):
•prevents rub-out effects
•increased tinting strength
•improved wetting of the coated surface
•good adhesion on polyethylene
•reduced water absorbtion
•use recommandation: 1.0 - 1.5% active dosage, 1.3 - 1.9% supply dosage

Performance as compatibilizer in solvent-borne alkyd lacquers (low PVC):
•prevents rub-out effects
•increased tinting strength
•reduced haze
•good adhesion on metal and zinc
•no impact on storage stability
•no yellowing effects
•no influence on surface drying and overpaintability performance
•no blocking effects
•use recommandation: 0.25 - 0.5% active dosage, 0.33 - 0.66% supply dosage
Performance as process aid in the production of water-borne emulsion paints (high PVC):
•reduces the grinding time by faster desagglomeration of TiO2 and fillers in slurries
•less energy consumption and more production capacity
•use recommandation: 0.3% supply dosage
