POUR POINT DEPRESSANT FOR LOW SULFUR FUEL OIL

DODIFLOW™ 8421

From the 1st of January 2020, the International Maritime Organization will implement a sulfur limit for marine fuels of 0.5% also known as “IMO 2020”. These low sulfur fuel oils (LSFO) may partly arrive from a sweet crude diet and as a residue-based blend of different refinery streams, like straight run, hydro-treated or hydro-cracked components. Depending on the composition, the LSFO qualities may show an increased pour point.

DODIFLOW 8421 is a specialized pour point depressant developed to improve the cold flow properties of 0.5% sulfur fuel oils that allows for compliance to the ISO 8217 fuel specification.

Product description

DODIFLOW™ 8421 is a pour point depressant (PPD) concentrate consisting of an active polymer dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent. 

DODIFLOW™ 8421 has been developed to significantly improve the pour point of 0.5 % sulfur fuel oils, such as low sulfur fuel oil (LSFO) and very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) to help achieve the specification requirements of ISO 8217.

Application & Dose Rates

DODIFLOW 8421 can be injected undiluted and requires heating to 50 – 60°C before use. For optimal performance, the temperature of the LSFO or VLSFO being treated with DODIFLOW 8421 should be above the wax appearance temperature (WAT) of that oil.

Treatment rates can vary but for LSFO and VLSFO a typical dose rate of 250 – 750 ppm is sufficient to significantly reduce the pour point depending on the oil properties.

For more challenging LSFO and VLSFO streams, treatment rates between 500 – 1500 ppm may be required, depending on the composition of the oil being treated.

In addition to lowering the pour point, DODIFLOW 8421 can also help reduce the viscosity and yield stress of LSFO and VLSFO. DODIFLOW 8421 also exhibits wax inhibitor properties and can help to mitigate wax precipitation in fuel and storage tanks. 

If required, DODIFLOW 8421 can be diluted in hydrocarbon solvent in ratios of 1:1 to 1:4.

Packaging & Storage

DODIFLOW™ 8421 is available in steel drums (200 L) or iso-containers. When stored in the original closed packaging and protected from environmental effects, DODIFLOW™ 8421 has a shelf life of 2 years.

 

Important: After prolonged storage at lower temperatures, the additive should first be heated and homogenized before further use.

The compatibility with metals, plastics and elastomers were deduced from typical behavior against the containing solvent. The product is compatible for storage in carbon and stainless steel. Other compatible materials are e.g. PTFE and fluoroelastomers.
