The disproportionation of toluene is a well-established process for converting pure toluene to benzene and xylenes in equal molar proportions. Xylene yield can be significantly enhanced by transalkylation of feed streams containing mixtures of toluene and heavy aromatics (A9+).
Transalkylation of methyl groups to yield xylenes is carried out over bi-functional zeolitic catalysts under hydrogen pressure. With heavy feeds, traditional catalysts suffer from fast deactivation by coking, and low conversion of ethyl- and propyl-aromatics.
The TransMax™ 500 catalyst series features optimized functions for transalkylation of methyl groups, disproportionation of toluene, and selective dealkylation of C9+ aromatics. This results in exceptionally high yields of xylenes and benzene, while achieving outstanding selectivity to minimize ethylbenzene and non-aromatic content. Thanks to the catalysts’ high efficiency, they enable aromatics producers to increase the profitability of their paraxylene (PX) production.
