Pipeline Cleaning Technology Frees Stuck Pig, Increases Pipeline Throughput

A pipeline operator had previously tried to clean a 12-inch, 9-mile section of an East Texas natural gas pipeline with a pig. The pig launched successfully but never came out of the other end, becoming lodged along the length of the pipe. Clariant Oil Services was asked to find a chemical additive that would both clean the pipeline and help dislodge the pig. more

Three gas pipelines in Southern Louisiana had been in continuous service for many years without having been aggressively pigged or cleaned. The three pipelines ran parallel with one another, were comprised of a 24-inch line and two 30-inch lines, and were each 64 miles long. Clariant Oil Services was contacted by the operator to develop an effective pipeline cleaning chemical treatment program. However, as the pipeline receiving stations were not designed to receive a large volume of liquids, classic, aqueous-based pipeline cleaning chemicals would not have been suitable for this operation. more

Clariant Oil Services Successfully Treats Produced Water Re-Injection System

An international operator in the North Sea carried out a modification to install a Produced Water Re-injection facility (PWRI) on an offshore installation, in order to reduce environmental impact and comply with heightened legislation on produced water discharges to sea. As a result of the PWRI facility, 50,000 bwpd produced water (which was previously discharged to sea) was commingled with 100,000 bwpd seawater and routed into five injection wells to support an existing water-flood scheme. more

Clariant Oil Services Solves Overboard Water Problems for Gulf of Mexico Facility

A major operator in the Gulf of Mexico had been experiencing intermittent overboard water problems. The field consisted of five platforms (A, B, C, D and E) that flowed total fluids to the main facility (also E), where the fluids were separated and the water discharged overboard. Fluids from Platforms A and B flowed to C, and then pumped to Platform E. The process equipment on E consisted of a high and low pressure separator that was two-phased and flowed to a heater treater. At this point, the oil was sold and the water went to a small skimmer, then a float cell before discharging overboard. The fluids from D flowed into the separators on E, while the fluids from C went directly to the treater. Incoming temperatures were between 65oF and 80oF with 125oF at the treater. more

A field operating within the UK North Sea experienced a decline in water injection following the start-up of Produced Water Re-Injection (PWRI). The onset of water break through resulted in sour gas production, which was not planned for during the design phase. A rapid decrease in performance was also witnessed, the source being attributed to the formation and subsequent re-injection of FeS, formed through reaction of the H2S with the system metallurgy. more

Production occurs from about 5,000 rod-pumped wells, and the field extends over 500 square miles. Initially, very few wells were treated and failure rates were high, which required wells to be worked over; these workovers became the operator’s biggest Operational Expenditure (OPEX). more

An offshore platform operated by a major producer in the Norwegian North Sea had been experiencing significant operational issues due to the deposition of calcium naphthenate throughout the process facilities. The platform produces 26,000 m3 of API 25° crude oil together with 13,000 m3 of produced water; the oil export specification is <0.5 % BS&W. more

Clariant Oil Services Improves Separation Performance in Oman Heavy Oil Facility

A major oil and gas operator in Oman was experiencing separation difficulties that resulted in unacceptable produced water quality. The onshore facility produces 157,000 bbls of 21° API crude together with 1,400,000 bbls of water per day, resulting in a water cut of 90%. Fluids are produced from several gathering centers and combined into six inter-field pipelines before treatment in a central processing facility. The co-mingled fluids are initially processed through free water knock out tanks at ambient temperature. The oil is then heated to 65° C before entering concentric wash tanks and finally routed to crude storage tanks prior to export. The produced water from each tank is further processed in CPI separators and subsequently injected downhole. more

A large, international fracturing and stimulaton company required an alternative chemistry to use in their fracturing operations in order to address the environmental concerns expressed by their client base. The incumbent chemistry used was 2-butoxyethanol (2-BE, BGE, EGMBE, butyl cellosolve) and was used as a pre-flush additive, acid additive and a component of visco-elastic surfactant (VES) formulations. EGMBE is a mutual solvent and it has been shown to provide a significant benefit to the success of given treatments. more

A semi-submersible platform in the North Sea had been experiencing separation and oil-in-water problems. The incumbent demulsifier product had been used for 20 years but, due to changes in government legislation, had a substitution warning and was required to be replaced. Although several chemical providers had attempted to replace the existing demulsifier with an environmentally-acceptable product, the conditions proved to be too challenging and each attempt ended in failure. more

An operator in the Haynesville Shale, USA, was experiencing large fluctuations in gas production, averaging just 250 Mscfd. Additionally, the well was slugging and the incumbent chemical supplier was unable to provide a solution suitable to the operator. Clariant Oil Services was contacted by the operator and asked to provide a chemical foamer program that would both stablize production (eliminate fluctuations in production) and increase gas production. After a system analysis and product testing, Clariant Oil Services recommended its WellBoost 402 technology, a multi-funtional product of foamer surfactant, scale inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor. more

A major operator in the UK sector of the North Sea commissioned Clariant Oil Services to qualify a scale inhibitor for a new high pressure/high temperature/high salinty field development. Following extensive modelling work, zinc sulfide production was identified as being a major risk to the new field development. Due to the severity of the scaling risk, Clariant Oil Services considered two products; a broad spectrum scale inhbitor that has a field-proven history of mitigating zinc sulfide scales and the new patented SCALETREAT ZFD sulfide control technology. more

Clariant Oil Services Improves Separation Performance in Russian Oil and Gas Facility

A major oil and gas producer in the Eastern Siberia region of Russia had been experiencing operational difficulties around crude dehydration and was not able to regularly meet the crude export specification. Typical production rates were 105,000 bpd of 35o API crude, together with 20,000 bpd of produced water. The produced fluids are processed through two trains, each including heaters and 3-phase separators, before combining at a separation unit and routing to the export reservoir. The inlet temperature ranges from 0oC to 5oC and rises to 45oC during processing. The target export crude water content is 0.05%. more

An offshore platform owned by a major producer in the UK sector of the North Sea has historically had problems with separation due to heavy crude and low process temperature. The oil-in-water quality has always been poor; however, because water injection availability was traditionally 99%, there had been little environmental impact. But the overboard oil to sea discharge consent is low (30 mg/Kg), with risk of financial penalty if exceeded. The high oil-in-water content in injection water also increases the potential for the water injection wells to be fouled, reducing injectivity, with the potential to reduce overall crude production. The incumbent product had a substitution warning and had been in use for more than five years. more

A major oil and gas FPSO operator in West Africa was experiencing separation difficulties due to naphthenate and wax stabilized emulsions that resulted in unacceptable export oil quality. The FPSO produces 210,000 bbls of 29.9o API crude, together with 6,300 bbls of water per day in a water depth of 1,200m. Fluids are produced from 11 wells via a number of subsea completions and combine into a single manifold on the FPSO. The process system comprises three separators and two de-salters aligned in series with typical temperatures ranging from 49oC to 60oC and finally 50oC. more

Clariant Oil Services Assists with Successful New Field Start up

A major offshore operator in the Caribbean was starting-up a new oilfield, projected to produce 50,000 to 60,000 barrels per day of 29 to 31° API crude oil. Clariant Oil Services was awarded a contract to provide production chemicals and laboratory services. The contract required the deployment of a suite of production chemicals, including a demulsifier, defoamer, wax inhibitor, corrosion inhibitor, scale inhibitor, water clarifier and biocide. The chemicals were to be dosed from the operator’s pre-fabricated injection skid. The injection system worked on the principle of ‘off-takes’ from a pressurized ringmain, which supplied chemical from reservoir tanks via subsea lines to injection points at various well protector platforms. more

Clariant Oil Services performed downhole batch clean-outs in combination with formation squeezes, utilizing a clean-out solvent that would contact the perforations and formation face. The treatment volume was allowed to soak for 3 to 4 hours to solubilize any heavy hydrocarbons in the wellbore area. The product utilized was SOLVTREAT 8557, a clean-out solvent and synergistic blend of high-grade solvents specifically designed for the removal of wax and asphaltene deposits. more

Iron Ore with Lime Pelletizing Case Study

To keep pace with increased global demand for iron ore, blast furnace pellet producers are testing the limits of their plant capacities. Increasing plant throughput without making significant capital equipment expenditures often sacrifices pellet quality. Clariant is at the forefront in developing new additive technologies to improve hydrated lime binder performance in the production of iron ore pellets. In one application, we are working with a customer to increase the quality of the blast furnace pellet circuit, allowing the circuit to produce more than its designed capacity without installing additional equipment. Higher product throughput rates reduces the amount of time the fine iron ore spends at each stage of the production process, including mixer inputs, balling disks and traveling grate furnace. When increasing plant capacity, producers can experience more surface cracks and reduced compression resistance with the blast furnace products when using hydrated lime binder alone. Clariant tested many different pelletizing additives to improve the binding properties of hydrated lime in the production of blast furnace pellets. Seven top performers were considered by the customer for trail to increase pellet quality, reduce the per-ton levels of hydrated lime consumption and keep production costs virtually the same. more

Producing and shipping lead and zinc concentrate minerals proved to be a challenge for one large ploymetallic mining operation in Peru. High humidity levels reduced concentrate throughput. Representatives with the Peruvian mine worked with Clariant engineers to develop a filtering aid to lower concentrate humidity below 10% for its lead and zinc products, while reducing filtration time. Without the use of a filter aid, neither disc nor ceramic filters could achieve target concentrate water levels. more

Due to its ability to absorb ambient humidity, the salt can turn rock hard if not protected from moisture during handling and shipping. In an effort to reduce overseas shipping costs of its CPN product, one large producer in Chile approached Clariant with a goal of replacing its poor-performing anti-caking agent. Since the product was used in soluble fertilizers for fertirrigation and hydroponics applications, it required a non-coating hydrophilic (water soluble) anti-caking agent that weakens the salt’s binding properties. more

The field was experiencing high pressure and high temperature (HP/HT) conditions, with the produced fluids containing appreciable concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Due to the corrosive nature of the fluids combined with HP/HT conditions, all downhole equipment was completed in a Corrosion Resistant Alloy (CRA). For practical considerations, however, the topsides processing facilities – including the production flowlines – were constructed from carbon steel so the deployment of a corrosion inhibitor was required at the christmas tree to mitigate for internal corrosion. more

Following laboratory evaluation under field conditions, CORRTREAT 702 was selected as a suitable corrosion inhibitor. CORRTREAT 702 is a strong film forming inhibitor designed for corrosion inhibition in oil and gas production systems. It is a blend of partially neutralized amines and volatile amines in an aqueous based solvent system for atomization into a gas stream or by continuous injection into oil production flowlines. The products’ active ingredients are stable at elevated wellhead temperatures and have very low emulsifying tendencies. more

A leading global fertilizer producer required a reliable anticaking agent for its bulk and bagged NPK and ammonium nitrate (AN) shipments. Clariant worked with the producer to develop an agent that would improve the performance of its standard anticaking agent. The producer’s standard fertilizers anticaking agent with oil-based filler exhibited little water repellent properties, reaching only 20%. Clariant technicians developed an exclusive paraffin-based agent that would deliver hydrophobicity of greater than 50%. more

An operator in the Haynesville Shale had a gas well with average production in December and January of 137.9 Mscfd. The operator switched chemical providers and, on February 1, Clariant Oil Services began foam-treating the well. WellBoost 401T, a multi-functional product of foamer surfactant, scale inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor developed by Clariant Oil Services, was applied, and average production increased to 170.7 Mscfd of gas in February and March. Clariant Oil Services Effectively Treats Sour Coal Bed Methane Well in the Raton Basin

An operator in the Raton Basin was experiencing very high levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in a coal bed methane well, making it impossible to sell the produced natural gas. The H2S levels in the well were measuring between 180 ppm and 200 ppm at the well head, causing concerns for the operator and other personnel who were not used to working around sour wells. The operator contacted Clariant Oil Services for a solution that would both decrease the levels of H2S in the coal bed methane well and improve the quality of the natural gas. more

Clariant Oil Services Demulsifier Improves Separation Performance Reduces Cost

A major offshore platform in the South China Sea was experiencing frequent, unstable interface and off-spec cargo oil problems. Clariant Oil Services was requested to identify a suitable chemical treatment program to resolve this problem. The platform produces 23,000 bbls of crude per day and 260,000 bbls of water per day from 20 wells. The platform performs from a two-train process system, comprising of just one separator for each process. After separation on the platform, the fluids are transferred for further separation to an FPSO, containing two separators and one EDD. See Table 1 on page 2 for system conditions. more

A low pressure, low rate gas well in Northern Alberta was sensitive to water production, and accumulation of produced water in the tubing would kill production. Clariant Oil Services was successfully treating this well with a batch treatment program of WellBoost 131**, a high concentration, liquid chemical foamer and solvent combination. WellBoost 131 would bring the well back from a no-flow situation, and subsequent backside flushes and blowdowns kept the well producing, but eventually it would die off and the cycle would need to be repeated. Clariant Oil Services decided to take a fresh look at this well and re-evaluate the program being applied. more

Clariant Oil Services selected a water soluble, slightly oil dispersible corrosion inhibitor from the CORRTREAT product range. This CORRTREAT product is extremely film persistent and performs very well in high velocity / high shear environments. It partitions and concentrates in the water phase providing excellent protection at the source of the corrosion problem. The corrosion inhibitor was injected into each gathering line at a rate of 1 pint per mmscf. Clariant Oil Services has treated this location for 15 years with no incidence of pipeline failure. more

A customer in the southern United States was experiencing freezing problems in a pipeline that ran under an active canal. The level of condensation in the gas was such that the cold temperatures in the ground under the canal caused ice crystals to form in the gas, which would then agglomerate together and eventually block the flow of gas through the line. The customer tried various solutions but nothing was generating the desired result. And although methanol had worked at lower doses, once the weather turned cold they could not pump enough methanol to keep the line from freezing. more

Gas wells can be dramatically affected by the production of water and condensate, which can hydrostatically overbalance the system and cause a loss or even cessation in production. Liquid foamers can be introduced to the fluid column to form foam that can be controlled, which would lighten up the hydrostatic head, enabling regular gas production to lift the fluid from the well. A well in northern Alberta was particularly sensitive to water production, as the typical operating pressure was just 300 to 400 kPa (43.5 to 58 psi) with a well depth of 400 meters (1312 feet). It took only a small amount of fluid to kill production. more

Low pressure gas wells can be dramatically affected by the production of water – either by free produced water or condensation water caused by the cooling of gas as it travels up the production tubing. When water collects in the bottom of a well, it can lead to lost production. And if allowed to build up to sufficient levels, it will kill production altogether. When solid soap sticks or liquid foamers are added to the water column, betaines, sulfonates (fluoro-surfactants for condensate foaming), etc. and a persistent foam is formed, thus lightening the hydrostatic head and enabling regular gas production to lift the water from the well. more
