Exolit™ AP 762 (TP)
Exolit AP 762 (TP) is a non-halogenated flame retardant based on ammonium polyphosphate, which develops its effectiveness through phosphorus/nitrogen synergism. Exolit AP 762 (TP) differs in its mode of action from chlorine- or bromine-containing flame retardants by achieving its effect through char formation. In the event of fire, thermal decomposition of the flame retardant leads to the formation of a compact, thermally stable carbon layer (char layer) on the substrate surface. This protective layer acts as a physical barrier between the heat source and the underlying substrate.
The protective mechanism is based on several synergistic effects:
- Thermal insulation: The char layer significantly reduces heat transfer to the substrate
- Diffusion barrier: The carbon layer limits oxygen supply to the combustion zone and reduces the release of combustible pyrolysis products from the substrate
- Endothermic reaction: The chemical transformation of the flame retardant withdraws energy from the system and lowers the substrate temperature
Through this combination, thermal degradation of the substrate material is delayed, flame propagation is inhibited, and the structural integrity of the material is prolonged in the event of fire.
