Topic: Innovative adjuvant technology to boost efficacy of biological applications

Abstract: 

Biologicals are sustainable tools for agriculture, for both biocontrol and plant health. However, their efficacy can be inconsistent due to challenges like maintaining microbe viability during storage and ineffective application. To address these issues, Clariant has developed expertise in the selection and design of new solutions by employing high-throughput biocompatibility testing methods. With this approach we were able to identify solutions which improve robustness and reliable efficacy for foliar applied biologicals. The Synergen™ Guard product range is a novel adjuvant technology based on tailor-made, innovative nanoemulsions containing natural waxes, which has proven to be compatible with a wide range of microorganisms, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. This biocompatibility ensures that the adjuvant does not adversely affect the viability of the biological active ingredients in can or in tank mixtures.

The Synergen™ Guard product range significantly enhances leaf coverage, which is a crucial factor for foliar-applied biological formulations. In trials with a Bacillus amyloliquefaciens formulation, Synergen™ Guard 100 increased the deposition and coverage on crop leaves by 2.5 times compared to the control. Additionally, the product acts as a rainfastness agent, preventing wash-off of the biopesticide from the leaf surface, with up to 80% of bacteria remaining after simulated rainfall.

Greenhouse trials with a commercial Beauveria bassiana formulation demonstrated a significant increase in whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) nymph control on soybean with Synergen™ Guard 100. The bioinsecticide combined with the adjuvant achieved comparable efficacy to a traditional synthetic pesticide. By utilizing the innovative nanoemulsion technology of the Synergen™ Guard line, biological field efficacy can be improved to be reliable and competitive with conventional.
