A Korean Green Citrus
Protects Your Skin from Harmful Indoor Pollutants
We often hear about the environmental factors that are harmful to the skin, namely the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, climate and air pollution. But did you know that when we’re indoors, air pollution can also damage the skin?
Our homes are filled with a variety of pollution sources, including household cleaning products, tobacco smoke, dust, pollen, mold, cooling and heating systems and gases such as carbon monoxide. Indoor pollutants also cling to and linger on our clothing and furniture. In fact, the air within our homes, schools and workplaces is more polluted than outdoor air, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
And since we spend nearly 90% of our time indoors , these pollutants can really add up. Indoor air impurities can cause skin itching, stinging, irritation, dryness, allergic skin conditions and atopic-prone skin, a chronic condition that causes hypersensitivity and skin barrier function damage.
"When exposed to indoor air pollutants (such as dust, chemicals and microorganisms) our skin’s first line of defense, the Langerhans cells, go into alert mode, triggering an immune response."
Harnessing the power of Korean green citrus
While indoor pollution is a relatively new issue for the beauty industry, Clariant and its South Korean partner BioSpectrum have developed the first active ingredient to specifically protect the skin from indoor air contaminants that lead to hypersensitivity and atopic-prone skin. The product, Eosidin™ is made from a well-characterized extract of a green fruit called citrus unshiu found on Jeju Island, a protected reserve off the coast of the Korean Peninsula.
Halting a vicious cycle
When exposed to indoor air pollutants (such as dust, chemicals and microorganisms) our skin’s first line of defense, the Langerhans cells, go into alert mode, triggering an immune response. White blood cells are then activated to produce cytokines, chemical messengers that set off a chain of events that cause hypersensitivity, itchy skin, and irritation. When this cycle occurs chronically, people develop atopic-prone skin and disruption in their skin’s protective barrier.
Eosidin, which contains the molecules synephrine and hesperidin found in the green citrus unshiu, has been shown in studies to inhibit pathways that lead to skin hypersensitivity. In addition, it contains naringin, which decreases histamine release, the cause of itching.
In a study conducted on volunteers with atopic-prone skin using a 2% concentration of Eosidin, 86% reported a decrease in itchiness and 100% reported a decline in skin dryness. Eosidin works to block the irritation cycle that causes skin itchiness and hypersensitivity, and helps to fortify the skin’s outer barrier. It can be used in skin and body creams, lotions, masks, toners, facial mists and more.
Derived from an all-natural and sustainable source, Eosidin offers the opportunity to use the power of Mother Nature to protect us from indoor pollutants and feel safe at home.
