Clariant Oil Services Demulsifier Allows Recompleted Gulf of Mexico Well to Flow

Benefits

  • Increased the speed of oil and water separation
  • Improved water quality by eliminating the emulsion interface
  • Improved oil quality by removing emulsified water dropletsAllowed producer to flow recently re-completed well into existing system
  • Grew production to 500 BOPD, generating an additional $17MM revenue per year

Background

An offshore platform in the Gulf of Mexico was experiencing high BS&W levels and poor overboard water quality due to perceived limitations of the existing equipment topside. The producer was informed that a recently-completed well would not be able to be produced because of existing vessels’ topside size limitations. Additionally, the platform’s process system did not include an oil heater treater.

Clariant Oil Services was invited to the facility to determine a solution to flow the well.

Clariant Oil Services Solutions and Value Delivered

After rigorous bottle testing, results indicated that Clariant Oil Services’ PHASETREAT 6219 demulsifier could increase the speed of oil and water separation. Furthermore, PHASETREAT 6219 treated the total fluids – even without the use of a heater treater. Thus, the newly re-completed well was able to flow at a rate of 500 BOPD into the existing equipment, without experiencing any BS&W problems.

By injecting the right chemical in the right location, Clariant Oil Services was able to ease the bottleneck on the platform, which allowed the shut-in well to be put back into production and generate an additional $17MM in revenue per year. Through monthly monitoring and optimizations, Clariant Oil Services has kept the system functioning at a high level.
