Clariant Oil Services Corrosion Inhibitor Improves Integrity of Pipeline in Brazil

Benefits
  • Significant improvement in corrosion rate to below the maximum limit of 0.025 mm/year (1.0 mpy)
  • Extended the life of the pipeline
  • Reduced the risks of production losses and damage to the environment

Background

A major operator in the Campos Basin in Brazil was experiencing corrosion-related issues in an offshore multiphase export pipeline containing H2S. The operator requested several chemical suppliers to recommend a corrosion inhibitor for evaluation according to the following criteria:

  • Compatible with all other system chemicals
  • Does not contain chlorinated organics, methanol or heavy metals
  • Corrosion rate < 0.025 mm/year
  • Efficiency > 90%
  • Does not cause separation issues or downstream process upsets

After initial laboratory evaluation, approved products were field tested in a fully operating pipeline.

Clariant Oil Services Solutions and Value Delivered

Clariant Oil Services conducted extensive in-house laboratory work to develop a sour service export corrosion inhibitor for this application.

Table 1: Conditions of the Export Pipeline

Pressure 10-15 bar BS&W 30-70%
Temperature 70°C Flow Rate 1.1-1.5 m/s
H2S Content 30 ppmv Dose Rate 25 ppm
CO2 Partial Pressure 15 psig Chloride Content 55,000 ppm

Clariant Oil Services‘ CORRTREAT BR703 showed outstanding performance at 25 ppm in the field trial and was selected for field deployment ahead of all other competing products.

Subsequent pipeline corrosion monitoring confirmed that the corrosion rate has been significantly reduced to less than the specification of 0.025 mm/year.

The performance of Clariant Oil Services’ CORRTREAT BR703 exceeded the operator’s requirements and successfully extended the useful life of the pipeline.
