Clariant Oil Services Develops Low Density, Oil-soluble Scale Inhibitor for Squeeze Application
- Low density to aid well lifting, post squeeze treatment
- Oil dispersed to minimize introduction of water into the reservoir
- Excellent barium sulphate scale inhibition efficiency
- Environmentally-acceptable and superior performance
Background
A major North Sea operator required a product that could be deployed for barium sulphate scale control in low temperature, high water producing wells that experienced significant well lifting problems post scale squeezing. Historically, scale control had been achieved through conventional aqueous squeeze treatments. However, due to increasing water production and decreasing pressure, well lifting problems had been observed. The use of hybrid treatments with diesel pre-flush and overflush had failed to overcome this problem. Field information is described below in Table 1.
Table 1: Well Conditions
BHT | 85°C |
Reservoir Pressure | ~ 250 bar |
Scale Predicted | Barium sulphate |
Clariant Oil Services Solutions and Value Delivered
Following an in-depth development program, Clariant Oil Services supplied a novel, low density squeeze scale inhibitor product, SCALETREAT 8061, which was non-emulsifying, effectively retained in the reservoir and provided a good level of inhibition against barium sulphate scale. SCALETREAT 8061 was successfully deployed and the well readily returned to production post squeeze. A summary of successive squeeze treatments is presented in Table 2 below.
