Clariant Oil Services Increases Production for Northern Alberta Heavy Oil Producer

Benefits

  • Hydrocarbon production increases of up to 60%
  • Removal of organic deposits, sands and clays from the screen and tubing in the near wellbore area
  • Application costs, including chemical and equipment, were paid back in less than one week

Background

A major heavy oil producer in Lloydminster was experiencing a rapid decline in production of some wells, compared to other wells in the same formation. Workover costs for these wells were significant.

When bitumen and sands were found to be the main cause of the production declines, Clariant Oil Services recommended the sand dispersant FLOTREAT FOTO 3556 as a treatment solution for the subject wells.

Innovation and Value Delivered

A volume of FLOTREAT FOTO 3556, mixed at a 1:3 ratio with clean oil, was used for tubing displacement at a volume needed to counteract the bottomhole pressure. The mixture of FLOTREAT FOTO 3556 and oil was then applied using a high-pressure triplex pump. This procedure involved pumping the additive / oil mixture and soaking; each treatment took approximately three days for results to be seen.

As a result of the Clariant Oil Services treatment, production increases of 6 m3 to 8 m3 oil / day were realized, and the need for well flushes decreased from once every two days to once every 10 days.

The FLOTREAT FOTO 3556 sand dispersant proved to be a cost-effective, easy and efficient way to boost production. Not only was the product applied with readily available equipment, but FLOTREAT FOTO 3556 applications also can economically boost production from existing assets that do not justify typical pumping simulation applications. The cost of the Clariant Oil Services FLOTREAT application is typically recouped in less than one week.
