Clariant Oil Services H2S Scavenger Treatment Controls Brazilian Export Quality

Benefits
  • Effectively controlled H2S levels in order to meet international export standards
  • Lower H2S levels created a more environmentally-safe sub-station facility for workers

Background

An export treatment facility located in Northern Brazil treats oil from several different fields. The various crude oils are mixed as they travel through the facility, with some containing high levels of H2S ranging from 1800 ppm to 5000 ppm. The treatment facility exports to international markets and thus the crude needs to adhere to international export requirements of <100 ppm of H2S. Table 1 below illustrates the flow rate, H2S level and crude temperature of the sub-station.

Table 1: Sub-station Information

Flow Rate  500 m
H2S Level 4,775 ppm
Crude Temperature 55°C

Clariant Oil Services Solutions and Value Delivered

To address this challenge, Clariant Oil Services selected SCAVTREAT 1063 from its suite of H2S chemical technologies. The dose rate was controlled in the outlet of the heater treater at 106.2 liters/hour. The dose rate summary showed that for every 1 ppm of H2S in the oil, 10 ppm to 12 ppm of SCAVTREAT 1063 should be applied.

After the SCAVTREAT 1063 application, H2S levels declined to a controlled level that met international export standards, and the lower H2S levels also created a safer, more environmentally-friendly facility for workers. Additionally, the treatment performance surpassed the expectations of the Brazilian exporter.
