Moisture Absorbing Bags for Container Shipments from Africa of Coffee, Cocoa Beans, and Nuts
CARGO DESICCANTS HELP ENSURE THE WHOLESOMNESS OF OUR FAVORITE COMMODITIES

Coffee, cocoa, cashews, peanuts (groundnuts), consumers the world over crave them. Some of the very finest are produced by Africa’s farmers.  But it’s a long way from the warm African growing regions to roasters, processors, and markets in North America, Europe, and Asia. So, getting to market often means a long ocean voyage, with raw commodities loaded into jute bags and sealed into shipping containers.

Getting these foods to buyers in good condition requires moisture control. The humidity present when a container is packed in a warm African port — in the air, the packaging materials, the bagged commodity itself – must be managed using cargo desiccants.  Otherwise, during the voyage, when the weather changes and temperatures fall, this moisture will condense into liquid—“container rain,” which can dampen the cargo and trigger the growth of molds, mycotoxins, or other microorganisms.  This cycle can happen repeatedly during the course of an ocean voyage with every change in the weather.

The Federation for Cocoa Commerce (FCC) recommends the use of calcium-chloride desiccants to protect food cargoes such as cocoa bean shipments. Container Dri™ II is a calcium chloride-based desiccant.  It provides high levels of moisture absorption, easily addressing the 65 percent or higher loading of calcium chloride recommended in the FCC guidelines for shipment of cocoa beans in containers.

Container Dri II can absorb up to more than three times its weight in excess moisture.  Under certain conditions, Container Dri II can absorb even more than 400 percent of its weight in moisture; the higher the moisture, the more aggressive the absorption:

Not all calcium-chloride based desiccants are the same

Calcium chloride desiccants vary widely in quality and absorption capacity. Clariant maximizes the absorption capability of Container Dri II cargo desiccants by using only high-purity calcium chloride and a special gelling agent.

Container Dri II configurations developed especially to meet the needs of African shippers

Container Dri II is available in a variety of configurations such as a convenient, 250-gram, two-strip package with a metal hanger, or a 1200-gram package with a metal hanger, which were developed especially to meet the needs of African shippers. These package sizes are more economical to use for containerized commodities. They are easy to install; simply hang the recommended amount inside the container.

Whatever the package size, when Container Dri II desiccant packages are properly placed in a shipping container, they absorb excess moisture and hold it in the form of a gel -- within a leak-tight pouch. So, even when the container temperature drops below the dew point, damaging water droplets cannot form. Thus, the commodity is protected all the way to the buyer.
