Understanding the natural sensitivities of developing baby skin
Thinner stratum corneum
Compared to adults, Stratum Corneum of babies is about 30% thinner and the gaps between corneocytes are larger.
Developing acid mantle
Babies' sebaceous and sweat glands are less active, so the acid mantle is not yet formed. This is one of the reasons why baby’s skin has a neutral pH in the first few days, whereas the skin of adults has an acidic pH value.
Less melanin
Babies' skin contains only few pigment-forming substances. That is why it produces less melanin than adults.
Physiological skin challenges:
- reduced water-holding capacity
- higher rate of water absorption and desorption (can lead to dry skin)
- more susceptible to chemical damage, and has high permeability to topical agents, which may induce toxicity
